Passages from the Daodejing, the Pentateuch of Moses and the Analects are quoted often in this book. They are not put in the notes; the passage is cited directly in the text. For example, Daodejing 1 means the first of the eighty-one chapters that make up the Daodejing, and Analects 4:17 means book 4, section 17 of the Confucian Analects. Passages from other classics of East and West, such as Spinoza, are likewise cited directly in the text in this form. Everything else can be found in the notes.
